Best Living is without doubt Carey Bell.
He is followed closely by Sugar Blue but Carey can play in so many styles and his sense of humor comes through in his playing. He has played on so many great recordings both as front and sideman I can't begin to name them all. I can't wait until next month when I get to see him play a rare gig with his son Lurrie, who happens to be the best guitarist in the world. Good genes in that pool.
Sugar Blue has that unique sound that makes you get goosebumps. I once saw him show up 15 minutes before closing time for a harmonica showdown with Willie "Big Eyes" Smith and Billy Boy Arnold on the bill. He was wasted, played about 3 songs, and blew everyone away. You could just see Billy Boy shaking his head in digust and a little jealousy. Those guys had put in a real nights work and he cut their heads leaving everyone talking about him. Too bad he moved to Paris. I wish he would get his shit together and do some more recording.
Best dead...now that is open for debate. When I hear Big Walter I think he is king but then I listen to Little Walter and that swinging sound just makes me want to cry. How can someone be so damn good. Perhaps a tie?

Mon, August 29, 2005 - 6:02 AMI can't argue against him just because he seems like such a nice guy. I have heard him a few times and although I still have to go with my picks it's nice someone took the time to register a vote even if you didn't pick a Best Dead.
