I'm thinking of the basic Marine Corps Band harmonica, key of C. Is there a better choice for a first harmonica to learn with?

The Marine Corps is a fine inexpensive harp to get started. For more money I really like the Horner Special 20 and the Lee Oscar. The feel of the harps is very different. A good harp really does make a difference. If you can invest $20 you'll notice the difference. Stick to a C harp. almost all the tabs you'll find are in C.

Whatever harp you pick, get started and practice. Carry it with you at all times, and you can use any five minute break to practice. Have fun!

I ended up going with a Hohner 365/28 14-hole Marine Band. This is turning out to be an interesting choice, since unbeknownst to me it's tuned an octave below the regular Marine Band in the first 10 holes. I don't think it'll hurt me to learn on this one, but it took me a little while to figure out why it sounded so strange.

I think the Lee Oscar is easier to start with than the Marine Band. Although they are where you want to end up.

The Lee Oskar has one of the holes a 1/4 step different than the Hohners...this is really good for soloing and scales but bad for chords. The Lee Oskar is more for an advanced player. The Hohners have a warmer, bluesier tone.....better for tongue blocking etc...

I have a Hohner Blues Harp and a Hohner Pro Harp. Both are quite nice.

Blues Harp isn't as air tight as pro harp. Highest note is tricky to get to sound right.

I started on a Marine Band and IMHO is a good starting harp. Kind of the standard that other harps are judged by. A lot of good blues was originally done on a marine band. Of course it was a better choice when it was 5 bucks. The Blues Harp doesn't seem too much different. I've played Hohner Special 20s now for years now and they play very nice. They are not that much more expensive than a Marine band, though it does add up when you buy all keys. With the plastic comb, they are more airtight than the Marine Band or Blues Harp and also easier on the lips. The reeds seem the same to me. I have heard that some people prefer the sound of a wood comb.

I have recently begun experimenting with Bushman's. They are a little more expensive but I had heard good things. I didn't care for the Soul's Voice. The wider spacing between holes didn't feel right to me. I am probably just used to Hohners. I was very impressed with the Delta Frost, at least at first. It is set up like a special 20 with the plastic comb and was very fast and easy on the mouth. I had a key of A and it was very responsive. It had a slightly different tone that was intriguing. Then I ordered a bunch more keys and was less impressed. The higher keys choked easier and seemed to play a bit out of tune. It may be a control thing. The jury is still out....
